Pebbled or Smooth? Choosing Leather
Two of the most common leather choices, compared — durability, appearance, patina, care and which suits your everyday carry.

Full-grain and pebbled are two of the most common leathers in crossbody bags. They're often confused, but they describe different things — one is a grade, the other a finish.
Full-grain
Full-grain is the strongest part of the hide, with the natural grain left intact. It's durable, develops a rich patina, and is the top tier for longevity. It can be smooth or textured.
Pebbled
Pebbled describes a textured, pebbled grain — which can be natural or pressed. The texture masks minor marks and scratches, making it a practical, low-stress choice for everyday carry.
Comparison
| Full-grain | Pebbled | |
|---|---|---|
| Durability | Very high | High |
| Scratch resistance | Good | Very good (texture hides marks) |
| Patina | Strong, rich | Subtle |
| Maintenance | Moderate | Low |
Which to choose
Choose full-grain if you want a bag that ages into something personal. Choose pebbled if you want a bag that looks good for longer with less attention. They're not mutually exclusive — pebbled leather can be full-grain.
